Telehealth Pioneer doxy.me Revolutionizes Telehealth with Vonage
Doxy.me, a telehealth company founded in 2013, set out with a mission to make healthcare more accessible by simplifying and enhancing virtual medical care. Created by Brandon Welch, then a PhD student, the platform was born from the need for a HIPAA-compliant telehealth solution that was straightforward, cost-effective, and scalable. Over the years, doxy.me has grown from a small startup into a global telehealth provider, serving healthcare professionals and their patients worldwide.

Reliability, scalability and high-quality video; streamlined development; focus on customer experience. When the COVID-19 pandemic changed the telehealth landscape, doxy.me’s reliance on Vonage ensured they could handle an unprecedented level of demand. With Vonage’s scalable video infrastructure, doxy.me successfully expanded operations without significant interruptions, accommodating up to 1 million video sessions daily at peak pandemic levels.
Collaborating for Interactive Accessibility
When doxy.me first embarked on its mission to create a simple telehealth platform that both doctors and patients could access with ease. Unfortunately at the time, telehealth solutions were either expensive, complex, hardware-dependent and lacked essential compliance with healthcare laws. And, pre-COVID-19, healthcare providers were hesitant to adopt telehealth, largely due to ingrained habits and skepticism about video consultations meeting the quality of in-person care.
Delivering high-quality video calls also proved to be a challenge since the quality was often dependent on users’ devices, networks and real-time data transmission. These factors could lead to lag and connectivity problems, creating issues in overall trust of telehealth for both doctors and patients. However, the onset of COVID-19 created an urgent need for a telehealth solution and rapid scalability as telehealth became a critical service. Because of that, within two months, doxy.me went from 80,000 to 700,000 providers, with daily video sessions increasing from 12,000 to 1 million.
Operating with a lean team, doxy.me had to not only ensure scalability, but reliability without the luxury of a large engineering team or support resources.

Focusing on User Experience
Doxy.me chose Vonage to seamlessly integrate into their platform. The reliability and simplicity of Vonage’s APIs allowed doxy.me to skip the complexities of building a new infrastructure from scratch, saving invaluable time and resources they didn’t have available.
Freed from video-related technical burdens, doxy.me prioritized enhancing the patient and provider experience. Brandon Welch, CEO and founder of doxy.me said "Vonage has been completely responsive to our feedback and needs. Their proactive support and commitment have been transformational for our business.”
Welch continued, “The technology works—period. Vonage’s commitment to responsive support sets them apart. Whether it was troubleshooting user device challenges or tackling broader technical issues, Vonage’s team provides the expertise needed to maintain high calibration. So while we’re focused on delivering a seamless experience to our providers and patients, Vonage handles video reliability, scalability, and updates. That allows us to think ahead and build what’s next.”
By leveraging the Vonage Communications API, doxy.me is able to integrate live, interactive video for their end users that is simple and easy to use, allowing for easy scalability.
