Global coverage, reduced voice call costs, increased scalability, and reduced complexity

Many riders enjoy the freedom associated with motorcycles, bicycles and ATVs. Because these vehicles are much more mobile, thieves can easily hide stolen vehicles in industrial parks, or even storage units and vans, making it nearly impossible to find them. But with a GPS tracker, the owner can locate the vehicle more quickly as the tracker sends out a real-time location.

“For a lot of riders out there, there wasn’t an easy way to secure their vehicle,” said Antanas Masevicius, Co-Founder and CTO, Monimoto. “Usually it would require a considerable investment, such as going to a garage or auto shop to install the security equipment. Additionally, a major obstacle owners were facing was battery management. Even if the motorcycle rider spent the money to get the tracker professionally installed, it would easily end up draining the battery on the motorcycle. And if the tracker relies on cell data or WiFi and there is poor or even no internet connection, the location of the stolen vehicle will be lost.”

“We wanted to provide a more reliable, scaled and secure option for riders,” continued Masevicius, “Monimoto trackers do not need cell data or WiFi to retrieve location information, so the motorcycle’s location can be identified easily. And because our trackers run on their own batteries, Monimoto devices are energy efficient and can last anywhere from 12 to 24 months.”

“One of our challenges was with voice call integration. At the beginning, we relied on three different technologies. We looked at other providers that could offer Voice APIs, but Vonage offered the simplest API and the best price performance ratio. And Vonage also provides our SMS APIs, enabling a multi-channel approach with our customer base. With shorter voice call rating intervals - per second not per minute, we are also able to reduce costs, and pass those savings onto our end users. Now that we just depend on the SIM card that has only data enabled, it lets us control ownership and reduce complexity. Vonage offers exactly what we need.”

Flexible, Scalable, Global Connections Powered by Vonage

Said Masevicius, “My background is in telecommunications, and about 8 years ago, I started to do some research on SIP protocol for communications and how to enable voice for data SIM cards. Since voice calls were quite expensive, and only a limited set of roaming providers would provide voice SIM cards suitable for IoT devices, we determined that data-only SIM cards were  more cost-effective and provided a more flexible and scalable option for us. This is where Vonage Communications APIs helped us.”

With Vonage Voice API, businesses don’t have to develop their own voice calling features from scratch and build out a global telecommunications network to support those features. Instead, developers can use the built-in features to quickly create voice applications or embed voice functionality into a company’s existing digital channels.

Vonage SMS API extends reach to customers through conversations within the context of the app. With its private and secure text messaging, Monimoto can deliver timely notifications to riders, with the ability to receive push notifications to multiple phones if the rider needs that flexibility.

“One of our challenges was with integration,” reflected Masevicius. “At the beginning, we relied on three different technologies. We looked at other providers that could offer Voice APIs, but Vonage offered the simplest API and best price performance ratio. And with SMS APIs, Vonage enables a multi-channel approach with our customer base. Vonage provides flexible, voice calls billed per second reducing our costs and passing those savings onto our end users. Now that we just depend on the SIM card that has data, it lets us control ownership and reduce complexity. Vonage offers exactly what we need.”

Ensuring Secure Location Services from Anywhere

“Quality and reliability is important,” said Masevicius. “Using Vonage, I can instantly get feedback if something is wrong and I can check almost anything myself. That’s very important for the fast pace of development.”

“Conversely, the volume cannot be a factor that will slow down response time. With the Vonage Voice API, we can perform the voice calls ourselves so we have more control. Previously, the device was calling the customer directly and we had no data to provide  status . There was no real time feedback and it was hard to debug. Now, we can observe the actual status of the device. If it is in an alarm state, or false alarm, we can interact directly with the customer, providing them with a better customer experience.”

Continued Masevicius, “One guy had six motorcycles in his garage and all of them were stolen. Because of Monimoto, he was able to locate the bikes straight away. We have a story like that every week. Our goal is to provide the easiest solution for our customers, requiring almost no technical knowledge from the rider. They simply use the Monimoto app and attach the device to the motorcycle. Riders are notified immediately of unauthorized vehicle use. We can provide that peace of mind using Vonage APIs.”
